Some helpful advice for anyone who may be planning or partaking in wedding events.

PUBLIC WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENTS

A wedding announcement, newspaper clipping

This is often done one month prior to your wedding day. A black and white head to shoulder photo is best. Some newspapers will print these announcements on a single sheet as a keepsake of your wedding announcement, a small fee is usually involved for this.

You've been asked, handed a ring, and through the tears, said yes. Following this precious moment and as your big day approaches it is time to inform everyone of your wedding in a official manner by placing an announcement of marriage in the local newspaper. It is not always common knowledge, but anyone who wishes to attend a wedding service performed in a Church is welcome to do so, unless special arrangements are made to keep it a private function.

BOMBONIERIES (Favours for your guests)

beautifully wrapped in canvas and decorated with ribbons.

* Poetry
Touching verses or quotations quite often accompany these gifts and can add a sentimental touch.

* Tradition
These party favours began as an Italian tradition and are meant to represent love, health and happiness and prosperity.

* Hand Made
Most are prepared or assembled by hand and personalized with the couples names and date.

TOP

* Bombonieries
This is the
Italian name for favours. Traditionally, these are keepsakes that wedding guests take home to preserve the memory of the day. However, they may also be given at showers or rehearsal parties etc. These favours can be almost anything such as candied almonds, mints, chocolates or even something more contemporary such as candles.

* Sentimental
These gifts tend to be items that have relevance in the couples lives, from dolphin shaped hand painted fridge magnets to pine tree saplings

Bridal Gowns

* Hand Me Down
Some brides choose to wear a gown that has been passed down from generation to generation in their family. Several dressmakers and dry cleaners specialize in restoring wedding gowns and completing alterations to make the gown look as if it were brand new.

* Care
When choosing your gown, look at the care label so that there will be clear instructions when you take your gown to be dry cleaned.

* Customized
If you choose to have your gown custom-made, allow six to nine months to have it crafted. The selection of style, fabric and detail can be time consuming. Often brides start a fitness program prior to the wedding. Whether it be to lose a few pounds or to tone up, let the designer know this in advance. This way they can make allowances for any alterations that may need to be made. It is much easier to take in a dress that is too big than to find you don't have enough material the month before. Several fittings are recommended.

* Accessories
Many bridal salons also carry accessories to complement the dress of your choice. Ask to see their selection of veils, jewelry, gloves and shoes. Try not to leave these decisions to the last minute for there will be many other details to look after.

TOP

* Selection
The selection of your wedding gown is one of the most exciting and anticipated aspects of your wedding planning. Your wedding dress is one of the biggest features of your wedding day, a dress that draws attention both to your beauty and to the significance of the celebration of your wedding vows. So it is wise to choose that dress carefully, taking time to select one that suits your figure, complexion and height just perfectly.

* Search
Begin your search in the bridal magazines where a variety of gown styles and fashions are displayed. These will give you a sense of what your options are and which dress lines you prefer. Take pictures of the gowns you prefer with you to the salons. If they don't have the exact manufacturer's design in stock, the consultant can help select gowns that most resemble the pictures. Prepare to try on several completely different gowns at the bridal store, but don't overwhelm yourself with seeing and trying on too many gowns in one day. If you plan to visit several salons, spread it over a few days. And book ahead: it is recommended you make an appointment to allow the shop's consultant to devote her undivided attention to you.

Maintaining your dress after the wedding

* Note
Make note of any stains on the gown and the source of the stains. When purchasing your wedding gown, check to see that the gown has a care label, or that you are given written cleaning instructions.

Careful attention must be given to pearl beads or sequins, which have been known to break down in the cleaning process. There are variations in the cleaning and preservation of gowns.

* Storage
Once cleaned, the gown can be hung in plastic or wrapped in tissue paper and boxed. Your choice of treatment will depend on whether you intend to keep the gown or to sell it. There are now options available to you for selling your dress through consignment shops.

TOP

Congratulations you're married! You've celebrated one of the biggest events of your life, completing months and months of preparation, and are now ready to run off on your honeymoon. Before you leave however, it is important to know that one of your cherished keepsakes of that special day - your wedding gown - is well looked after.

* Cleaning
Designate a family member to take your gown immediately to a dry cleaner specializing in the dry cleaning of wedding gowns. With your gown being a large investment, you will want to ensure it is cleaned and preserved for the years ahead as it may be requested to be worn again some twenty years from now.

BRIDESMAIDS

* Dresses
Selecting your bridesmaids' dresses can be a difficult task given the fact that you're obliged to consider a variety of body types, personalities and hair and skin colours. Begin by having a tete to tete with all your bridesmaids, and inviting their input on style and colour. While you will have the final vote, they will have an opportunity to air their opinions and to brainstorm the options that work best for everyone. One possibility is to take your bridesmaids with you to the store, pick a color and fabric and give each bridesmaid a choice of two or three dress styles. It's not crucial that each dress be identical, but rather, that each bridesmaid look her best in a dress that flatters her figure and highlights her best features.

* Being Practical
You may also consider a dress style that would be appropriate for more than one time wear. This is a very sensible approach and will leave the bridesmaid with a wonderful addition to her wardrobe.

* Commitment
Remember that being a bridesmaid entails a commitment of time and money, that can end up costing you several hundreds of dollars depending on your brides wishes. Discuss a dress budget in advance, and to avoid any hard feelings, it should not be exceed. There is also the cost of shoes and accessories such as decorative hair clips or jewelry. On the wedding day most bridesmaids have their hair and makeup done with the bride at a previously stated location, this creates a great sense of friendship and adds to the enjoyment of the day.

NOTE: The dresses you see in the picture to the left were all purchased at Frenchy's.

THE CAKE

The cutting of the wedding cake symbolizes a lifetime of sharing as the bridal couple, with arms intertwined, offer each other a piece of the cake.

* Homemade
If you choose to make the cake yourself some bakers will complete the icing, marzipan and decorating for you. They can even supply you with the materials necessary to bake the cake.

* Toppers
As an alternative to the plastic bride and groom cake toppers, consider an arrangement of fresh flowers, porcelain cherubs or an elegant glass sculpture to place atop your cake.

* Traditions
It is customary to save a piece (usually the top layer) of your cake. This is usually done by freezing it, and upon the arrival of your 1st anniversary, thaw and eat it in celebration of life, love, and family.

Another tradition is to revive this cake at the the christening of your 1st child, This is said to reinforce your bond as a couple as your family receives a new member.

TOP

* History
The wedding cake was traditionally a fruitcake, dating back to a time before baking powder and baking soda. The cake was symbolic of fertility and abundance. Bakers today create wedding cakes in a variety of flavours and styles.

* Style
In the hands of a creative cake designer, a wedding cake can reflect the bride and grooms lifestyles and personalities. Many bakers can duplicate a cake design from a photograph or picture. The baker you select may specialize in particular flavours, so be sure to ask for samples.

* Guests
When ordering your cake, be sure to ask for an additional section of the cake if you plan to give each guest a wrapped piece as they leave the reception. Be sure to make arrangements for delivery of the cake and storage at the reception facility. If you plan on keeping the top tier of your cake to be shared on your first anniversary, ask your baker how it should be properly stored to maintain its freshness.

Catering

* Hosting a Party
Whether it be an intimate garden reception for 30 or a formal sit down dinner for 500, this will likely be the largest party you'll ever host. When selecting your caterer, don't just look at the price per head. Review the various menu selections and don't be afraid to substitute between them. Many caterers provide menus as a guideline and will then personalize them to suit your preferences.

* Know What You Want
It helps to know what, precisely, you require from a caterer, and what the dictates of your budget are. Consider the style of reception you want - whether it's buffet, food stations, a sit-down dinner or a cocktail reception, and the types of food you'd like. If you don't know what you want an experienced caterer should be able to give you a few suggestions on what will work for the number of guests you have.

* Considerations
Also consider the dietary requirements of your guests. If choosing a sit down dinner, be aware of any vegetarian requirements or specific health related restrictions. This can make the process much more complicated but will ensure your guests are comfortable with what you are serving. With so much attention drawn these days to dietary control, the choice of a buffet allows you to satisfy almost everyone's palate.

* Coordinating
An important question to ask your caterer is if they will coordinate all of the service staff and party rentals. They may recommend a specific party rental supplier, which can eliminate the task of cleaning everything up the day after, when everyone in the family may be recuperating from the previous evening's celebrations.

The Dance

Let the fun begin. Now is the time to unwind and relax. The dance portion of the reception is meant to be great fun for you and your guests and signifies the closing of the days festivities.

For more information call your local professional Disc Jockey's

* Who's Next
Quite often the single Lady who catches the garter is required to dance (usually slow) with the single gentleman who caught the garter in hopes that a new romance will be sparked.

* Old Traditions
A long standing tradition was for the Bride & Groom to leave the reception fairly early and head off to their honeymoon accommodations or at least where they have made plans for the wedding night. The party usually moved outside to watch the couple leave in a vehicle that was usually decorated to draw attention by the groomsmen beforehand. We strongly urge anyone who intends to play a wedding prank to keep it nondestructive.

TOP

* Traditions
One of the highlights of the festivities is the bouquet and garter toss and should be done fairly early in the dance so elderly family members who are not able to stay late can still see this event. Talk to your florists about your bouquet to insure that it will withstand a toss and grab. The recipient should feel they have captured a wonderful gift and not a busted bouquet.
There are a variety of ways to perform the toss and you should discuss this with your DJ or MC about your desires and tastes. It is essential that anyone involved with catching must be single.

It is quite often requested by the audience that teeth be used in the garter removal, so gentleman, please brush and floss well after the meal.

Decorations

* Tips
Whether you hire a professional or choose to decorate yourself, here are a few tips to help you create a breathtaking and festive atmosphere. Decorations should be as unique as you are. Use your imagination and have fun.

* Suit Yourself
Choose decorations that fit the space, your budget and your personality.
You would be well advised to check with your church before purchasing decorations to see what limitations they may have.

* Homework
Take photos at other events and parties you attend or pull examples you like from magazines.
When working with a professional decorator, it is useful to have photos of the space you're decorating. Be clear about what you like (and also what you don't like).

* At the church...
focus on the entrance, the aisle and the altar. Keep in mind that often, less is more. You don't want any decorations to detract from you walking down the aisle!
Floral garlands or topiaries are nice for the church entrance. Use silk or fresh flowers, fabric or ribbon bows to mark pews and consider flower arrangements and candles for the altar.

* Reception
When booking your reception facility, note the existing colours before choosing your decorations. What colours in the carpet, walls, drapes and chairs will you have to work with? Ask if the facility has any restrictions around decorating, and how much time you'll have before and after the wedding to decorate and dismantle.

TOP

Flowers

* Planning
Meet with your florist early in the wedding planning process. You'll need to discuss the colour theme of your bridal party, the details of your wedding dress, the season of your wedding, and the style of your wedding whether it will be formal or informal. If possible, bring in swatches and pictures of your wedding gown and bridesmaids dresses.

* Final Selections
As you begin finalizing your wedding details, narrow down the selection of flowers for your bridal party bouquets and table centerpieces. Many couples today also choose to have fresh flowers on their wedding cake. When selecting a flower arrangement for your flower girl, keep the size of the bouquet small enough to not overpower her.

* Be Practical
You can save money by using the flower arrangements that decorated the church at your wedding reception as well. Make sure you either delegate the responsibility of transferring these arrangements to someone with a large car or van, or ask your florist to make arrangements for the transfer.

* Delivery
Your florist can also coordinate the delivery of the corsages to the bride's home and the boutonnieres to where the groom is staying. Don't forget to include your officiate, organist, grandparents, and special family members if your budget permits.

* Floral Preservation
Your wedding flowers are a special part of one of the most memorable days you will ever know. Imagine, years later, reminiscing about your wedding day and being able to tell your children, Those are the flowers I carried down the aisle when I married your father The beauty and memories that flowers bring carry a special sentimental value to each of us. Now you can preserve your wedding Flowers and capture those memories forever.

With several methods of flower preservation available today, you will be able to create a one-of-a-kind wedding day keepsake to treasure for years to come.
Each method, whether it be silica gel crystal dehydration, floral pressing or freeze drying, has its own unique characteristics and benefits. To ensure the best preservation techniques for your Flowers, it is best to place orders and enquiries before your wedding day to ensure space availability and to receive pre-preservation care instructions.

Groomsmen

* Commitment
Guys, your good buddy has just asked you over beer and a barbecue to stand for him or maybe even be his best man, so your thrilled to be a part of your friends big day and are honored to have been asked. Just keep it real, for saying yes to this does mean some responsibility, yes that's right I said responsibility.

* Expenses
First of all; There maybe some expenses involved such as the tux and shoe rental, costs for having the traditional stag party etc,. Oh I've got your attention now.

* Time
Secondly; You will be required to give some of your time to help arrange things, put up decorations, attend the rehearsal and of course being there for all the day's festivities.

* Decorum
Always remember the reason for it all, and keep proper decorum. Nudity and or excessive drunkenness at the stag party will only help to deter from the wonderful day that the Bride and Groom have worked hard to achieve.

* Honesty
If any of these things present a problem you may want to pass on accepting this duty. You will not be doing your friend any favors by accepting and doing a poor job. PS: Remember to wear your socks.

MEN'S FORMAL WEAR

* Styles
Choosing a rental tuxedo is getting more interesting with wider offerings in design and colour. Charcoal and ash grays are giving grooms choices beyond pure black, and the latest trends in jackets are the three-button single-breasted jacket and the high button vest and jacket. In the vest and cummerbund, the groom and his party have a chance to complement the bridesmaids' dresses while adding their own signature of style.

* Order in Advance
Be prepared to make a decision as which tuxedo store you will hire from at least three months before your wedding day. Fittings for men's formal wear typically occur three weeks before the wedding, and tuxedos are picked up at least two days prior.

TOP

If members of the bridal party are coming from out of town, measurement guidelines should be phoned or faxed well in advance.

* Shop Around
It's important to shop around and find the best prices for tuxedo rental, combined with impeccable service. Don't be fooled by what appear to be competitive deals until you're certain precisely what the price includes. Jackets, shirts, studs, cuff links, bow tie or ascot, pants, vest, cummerbund and formal dress shoes are all essential ingredients to men's formal wear and can add significant hidden costs if you've not accounted for them in a 'special deal.

GIFT REGISTRIES

For more information about local businesses, see our Gift Registry Page

After the wedding you can review the items selected and make substitutions in order to best complete your sets. Upon opening shower or wedding gifts, ensure that someone is recording who the gift is from so that you can send personalized thank you notes with reference to the gift.

* Convenience
Many couples begin their registry at major department stores, which cater to the mainstream and offer everything from towels and linens to appliances. By registering a variety of items, guests may select from a variety of prices. For couples who prefer an alternative to mainstream shopping, an increasing number of boutique and specialty stores now offer a bridal registry, affording couples (and their guests) a much wider range of gift options. Many stores have computerized systems allowing their stores to be linked up across Canada, or provide toll free numbers to make shopping convenient for out of town guests.

TOP

* Make It Easy
If you have ever received a less-than-useful gift, you'll know all too well the potential benefits of the gift registry. The gift registry offers a practical solution, as well as a point of guidance for the many guests who are not familiar with the taste, style and needs of the marrying couple. As your guests have less free time to shop for that ultimate wedding gift, they may be relieved to discover that you've pre-registered at the stores of your choice. It also eliminates a situation where the wedding couple receives six unwanted toaster ovens that cannot be returned.

* Give Notice
Use announcement cards with the wedding invitation to let your guests know that you've pre-registered. Most guests will appreciate knowing your tastes in advance of their purchase and will feel their dollars were well spent.

Hair & Esthetics

* Look Your Best
Every bride wants to look her best on her wedding day. This is the time to pamper yourself, but when it comes to the face, skin and hair, preparations should begin well in advance. Consider booking your makeup artist and hair stylist eight-to-12 months before your actual wedding date. and ensure that you select professionals with whom you have a good reapportioned who know precisely what kind of look you're seeking.

* Timing
Allow ample time to restyle, cut or grow out your current hairstyle without sending yourself and your groom into shock the day you walk down the aisle. If you plan to wear a headpiece, have your hairstylist do a trial run to ensure it will remain well in place. Some hairstylists will come to your home the day of the wedding. Be sure to pack a small touch up kit including brush, pins and hair spray.

TOP

* Skin Care
When it comes to skin care, drink lots of water so that you're well hydrated in the days and weeks before the wedding, especially if you are tanning. Get your beauty sleep, and avoid alcohol to ensure no unsightly blemishes appear on your skin. If you plan to have a facial done, do so a month in advance to prevent any unwanted skin reactions.

* Photos
Remember, the way you look on your wedding day will be captured forever in your photos and on video. So in the interests of looking your very best, take the time to prepare your skin and hair well in advance, opting for a look that has lasting power and promotes a healthy glow.

The Honeymoon

* Perfect Start
A honeymoon can be the perfect start to a marriage, full of passion, romance, intimacy and relaxation. Most of us consider the honeymoon to be the ultimate holiday, where we can enjoy a destination to its utmost with our new spouse. But possibly the most crucial part of a honeymoon is its planning. Perfect honeymoons don't often happen by chance. They take careful forethought, meticulous planning, attention to detail and lots of homework.

* Wish List
It helps to put pen to paper and consider the kinds of things you and your spouse want to do on your honeymoon. Define what it is you enjoy doing while on vacation, and determine if your wish list of personal preferences is in synch with your spouse's.

If it's not, you'll need to reach a compromise and determine an agenda of activities that are mutually agreeable you select a destination.

* Extra Special
Look for travel companies that specialize in honeymoon planning. Using a professional to plan your honeymoon will ensure you the ultimate vacation. They take that extra effort to make your honeymoon romantic, exciting and memorable.

It's possible to have a superb honeymoon closer to home for a fraction of the cost, without sacrificing the intimacy and privacy you crave. Consider some of Nova Scotia's quieter corners.

Invitations

For more information about local businesses, see our Invitation Page

* Selection
There is a wide selection of paper available including parchment, rice paper and glossies. Its recommended that you select your invitations in person to feel the texture of the paper stock, see how it looks in different lighting, and to review any possible variations that might be expected. Invitation stores often supply guests books, napkins, matches, and plume pens.

* RSVP
Remember to mail out-of-town invitations well in advance, at least three months before your wedding day. Local invitations should be mailed two months prior to your wedding. It is a good idea to include a map for those guests who may not be familiar with the area. See more details on RSVP under Stationary

TOP

* Order Ahead
Choose your wedding invitations at least six months prior to your wedding day to allow plenty of time for preparation and mailing. A vast selection of styles is available, from the formal and traditional engraved invitation, to the handwritten casual invitation. The format you choose is an expression of your own style. Invitations catalogues may help you to select a design, leaving you to choose the ink color and lettering style. If you choose to design your own invitation, some stores provide the services of a calligrapher for custom work. A computerized calligraphy service can also do a professional job.

* Give Notice
Use announcement cards with the wedding invitation to let your guests know that you've pre-registered. Most guests will appreciate knowing your tastes in advance of their purchase and will feel their dollars were well spent.

JEWELERY

It's thought that the ancient Romans introduced the tradition of wearing the ring on the third finger of the left hand. This finger was believed to contain the "vena amoris"the vein of love was thought to lead directly to the heart.

The tradition of the diamond engagement ring goes back to 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy, as a token of his undying love.

* Intrinsic Value
The value of a diamond is ultimately determined by Four Cs:
CUT: refers to the arrangement of the diamond facets. Common cuts include round, oval, brilliant, marquise, heart, pear and emerald.

CARAT: refers to the weight. A carat is 200 milligrams, with one carat made up of 100 points. In other words, a 25-point diamond weighs a quarter carat and a 50-point diamond weighs a half carat.

CLARITY: refers to the way light is reflected through the diamond. Most diamonds have flaws, called inclusions, which affect the clarity of the stone. The fewer flaws there are, the more brilliant (and the more expensive) the diamond is.

COLOUR: most diamonds have subtle yellow or brown tones. Colourless diamonds are more rare and therefore more valuable.

* Sentiment
The sentimental value of a wedding ring is without value, although the initial investment may seem high it is really not overwhelming considering it is designed to get a lifetime of wear.

* Heirlooms
Some couples have adopted a family heirloom as an alternative to the diamond ring. Also, gold from old rings no longer worn by family members can be redesigned into a special wedding band. If you use a ring designer, be sure to discuss your taste and lifestyle to ensure that a complementary ring is created.

LINGERIE

There are two things that you should take into consideration when your are choosing lingerie.

1) Beauty
Although unseen by anyone but your new husband, lingerie can give you a great sense of beauty and confidence. These sensual feelings can enhance your day and add to the excitement of the wedding night.

2) Comfort
While you walk down the aisle, the last thing you should have on your mind is uncomfortable undergarments. It would be wise to select lingerie that reflects your style, while giving you comfort and that ultimate feeling of elegance and romance.

3) Fitting
When shopping for lingerie, you should bring in a picture of your wedding gown to ensure it will be properly fitted. Don't wait until the week before the wedding to buy your lingerie, it is important to wear it to all of your gown fittings.

* Be Practical
Ladies, it is always good to seek advice from your spouse on lingerie because you want him to like the way you look. But in this case your comfort is of the utmost importance and what may make the evening more enjoyable for him may deter from your comfort through out the day. This is an item you should be practical about.

MUSIC

* Setting The Mood
Music is one of the most powerful means of setting the mood and tone of your event, even though it may only require a small part of your budget. Don't leave your entertainment to a well-meaning friend with an extensive CD collection. Go with professionals who are contractually obligated to show up on time, who play the music you agreed upon, and, importantly, who fit your style and taste.

* Selection
Planning your music should be seen as a fun activity for you and your fiance. Public libraries offer a wealth of classical music which you can borrow to find selections that fit your tastes and requirements. Professional musicians and DJs will have many excellent suggestions to offer, these suggestions come from many years of experience and should not be discarded lightly.

* Ambiance
Remember, you can combine live and / or recorded music at the ceremony and the reception. Dinner music is a very popular item and adds wonder ambiance during the meal.

* Book Ahead
Once you've set a date, the music should be one of the first things you hire, as performers can be booked months in advance.

* Recommendations
The managers of your ceremony and reception venues may be able to recommend musicians and DJs. Friends and family may also be able to provide suggestions and references. Remember, whomever you choose, you should feel at ease with them when you meet to plan the play list. Whether you choose a band or DJ, get everything in writing, including fees, deposits, minimum hours played, play lists, technical requirements such as amplifiers and power outlets, attire, transportation fees and directions to the venues.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Your wedding photographs capture the precious moments of your day in a way no other medium can, and over the years you'll find you keep coming back to them, vividly remembering the emotions, beauty and uniqueness of your wedding.

* Choose Carefully
Take time and care in picking the photographer who will capture your big day. Professional photographers have the skill, expertise, experience and equipment to make their photographs speak volumes. They notice the small details, like the tender curl of the bride's hair, the delicate flowers on her dress and the tears that come spontaneously during a day infused with love.

* Start Early
Start looking for a photographer eight-to-12 months in advance of your wedding the best photographers are booked months ahead of time.

* Samples
Meet with several professionals, scrutinizing their portfolios for evidence of their style before you make your decision. Remember that the portfolio reflects the photographer's best shots, picked specifically to show potential clients. Ask to see photographs from a recent wedding, and base your judgment on these, too. Finally, determine if you feel comfortable with a photographer. You need a good rapport with your photographer, as this relationship will be reflected in your photographs. Ensure that the person you interview will be the one taking the pictures at your wedding.

* Styles
Familiarize yourself with the various styles of wedding photography. There are the traditional photographs, with family members and friends lined up on either side of the bride and groom. But there's also a photojournalists style of photographs, wherein the photographer attempts to capture the spontaneity of the moment. There are no posed photos and pictures are taken without the photographer's forewarning or instruction.

* Give Details
Provide a list of the shots you must have and who is to be included in them. Advise the photographer of potentially uncomfortable situations in the family, such as death or divorce. Agree upon a time for prenuptial photographs and ensure that your photographer knows what your stylistic preferences are and where to find you.

    Making Memories, Touching lives!

    REHEARSAL

    * Practice makes perfect
    A few days prior to the wedding, or on the evening before, a rehearsal is held to ensure the ceremony runs smoothly. If possible, all members of the bridal party, parents, ushers and any musicians or soloists should be present. Your wedding officiate will assist you in the general arrangement of the wedding procedures, including the entrances, an overview of the ceremony including the readings, and the exits. It is important that you express your wishes for any special touches at this time.

    * Media
    Have your photographer and videographer attend to get an sense of the layout of the ceremony site and to shoot some rehearsal footage. Also, give the flower girl and ring bearer plenty of opportunity to get used to walking down the aisle.

    The Rehearsal Dinner

    * Traditions
    The rehearsal is usually followed by a dinner, traditionally hosted by the groom's parents. The rehearsal dinner may be held at a restaurant or at a home. In addition to being a way to thank the bridal party, the dinner also gives everyone a chance to get to know one another before your big day. It also gives the couple the opportunity to present their gifts of appreciation to the bridal party.

    * Modern Ideas
    The tradition of having the brides parents pay for the entire wedding is no longer etched in stone. More and more couples today are contributing significantly to the cost of the wedding, if not paying for it entirely. Its wise to discuss your expectations with both sets of parents so that there are no last minute surprises.

    RENTALS

    * Decorations
    A visit to a store specializing in complete party and event rentals is a must if you're planning a garden or home wedding, or if you plan to decorate the reception hall. Get references from your caterer as they'll be familiar with reliable companies and will have worked with them in the past.

    * Service Type When planning your rentals, you'll need to know how many guests are coming, whether you plan a cocktail or buffet-style reception, and what facilities you have for heating and serving food.

    * Policies
    Most party rental stores can supply you with chairs, tables, linens in various colours, china, crystal, silverware, and coffee makers. In addition you can rent candelabras, arches, canopies, plant stands and a variety of decor items. Note that you'll be paying from the time you pick up the items until they are returned. Be sure to check the policy on breakage and whether the glasses and dishes are to be returned clean.

    SEASONS

    Every season has it's own natural beauty along with it's advantages and disadvantages. Keep in mind that you should take at least a year to plan your wedding, you can carefully decide what Season would best suit you plans.

    Spring - Late spring is very beautiful with many varieties of flowers starting to bloom. There will be many beautiful locations for picture taking. The weather should be rather cool which will help keep people dressed in formal wear comfortable.

    Summer - Always lush green and beautiful in the Annapolis Valley with many awesome locations for picture taking. Most perennials will be in full bloom. Keep in mind that late summer can be very warm and air-conditioned facilities should be a strong consideration. However very few churches offer this creature comfort.

    Fall - With cooler air and the fall colors this is a wonderful time of year for a wedding.

    Winter - Mid to late winter weddings are rather rare but early winter and new years eve weddings are rather popular. Out door photos are quite possible but location selection becomes more tedious.

    What ever season you choose proper planning started well in advance will ensure a wonderful day for everyone.

    SHOES

    * Comfort
    Your choice of shoes should complement your wedding gown with an emphasis, on comfort. You will be on your feet for a good number of hours, standing, walking and dancing. Fabric shoes can be dyed later to match other dresses in your collection.

    * For the Guys
    Shoes are usually part of the tuxedo rental, and patent leather is the preferred choice. If You are thinking of having your groomsmen wear their own shoes, it would be prudent to have them bring their shoes to you for inspection. This will make sure that their shoes will match some what, and eliminate the risk of shoes that may be tattered or well worn. Adding shoes to a tuxedo rental is not very expensive and can save a number of headaches.

    * Local
    Once again having a good fit and comfort is very important, find a Local Shoe Store that can help you.

    BRIDAL SHOWERS

    A shower planned one to two months before the wedding can be a fun event for both bride and groom. These days its popular to host Jack and Jill showers where both bride and groom are honoured. This gives all of your friends and family a chance to get together in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Its no longer necessary to have the traditional shower or tea party format.

    * Themes
    Some possible themes include a lingerie shower, wine shower, CD shower, or a furnishing-the-kitchen shower. The choices are endless.

    * Planning
    Whoever is planning to host the shower should consult with the bridal couple as to what type of party to host, and of course, who to invite. Those invited to the shower should also be invited to the wedding. Don't forget to notify out-of-town family members about the shower. Although they likely won't be able to attend, they'll probably want to send a gift. Bridal party members who may attend several of your showers should know it isn't necessary to bring presents to each shower.

    SPA'S

    The spa, the spa, the spa, oh yes the spa. For those of you who are lucky enough to have experienced a spa there is really nothing like it. Spa's are a great place to relieve stress and get in touch with your inner self through relaxation methods that radiate from the outside and permeate to your inside.

    * Groups
    They can be enjoyed either intimately, with a small group or with a very special partner. Many spa's are not just for woman but cater to couples and these sessions can be used before or after a wedding or incorporated into your honeymoon.

    Due to the intimate nature of a spa, it isn't recommended to host larger parties there, perhaps just you and you maid of honor or a special friend. Have you ever tried to talk when being given a back massage, besides it would be best experienced by closing your eyes and savoring every sensation. Trying to have a discussion with a group of people during this will limit your enjoyment.

    THE RECEPTION

    * At Home
    Having the ceremony and reception at home is another option. While you may not be able to host a sit-down dinner for 100, a cocktail reception following the ceremony can be very intimate and sometimes less costly. Make arrangements for parking if there will be a number of guests with cars, and be sure to give your neighbors ample advance notice.

    TOP

    * Book in Advance
    As there are only so many weekends in the year available, its a good idea to reserve your wedding reception site as early as possible. Its not uncommon for some locations to be booked a year in advance. While your site selection is a reflection of your style, keep in mind the traveling distance from the ceremony site to the reception facility. Out-of-town guests may be unfamiliar with the area, so the distance between the two locations should be convenient and easy to navigate. And keep their comfort in mind. While the bridal party is taking photos, guests should have a place to spend the hour or so in between the ceremony and reception.

    * Number of Guests
    Another consideration in reception site selection is the number of guests. Hotels usually have a variety of banquet rooms and can accommodate both smaller intimate weddings and larger extravagant weddings. Halls and reception facilities may be more limited in space, but may provide a more interesting and unique atmosphere. Be sure the hall has ample room for the musicians and dancing, and ensure that there are adequate kitchen facilities for your caterer. Inquire about any candlelight restrictions and specific decorating regulations. You often have a choice of catering services when booking halls and some will even provide you with a list.

    * PA Systems
    It would be wise to look into the PA services your hall has to offer, some in-house PA systems leave allot to be desired and it is important that your guests can hear the speeches and toasts that are being made. Quite often Disc Jockey's provide a PA and microphone service for speeches at the reception and their sound systems tend to be much better than most in-house systems. This works well if they are there providing dinner music as well.

    STATIONARY

    There is quite a number of details to consider when it comes to buying or creating stationary for your wedding.

    * Invitations
    Invitations must be send, delivered, mailed or just plain handed out to everyone you wish to attend the reception. This formal invitation sets the mood and let's everyone know that responding to the invitation is not a trivial matter.

    * Reply (RSVP) Cards
    These cards should be included with the invitation along with a postage paid envelope. These are very important because they will give you the number of guests that will be attending. This figure will be required by your caterer, reception hall, wedding planner etc. The sooner this number is firmed up the sooner your providers can truly start preparing.

    * Ceremony Programs
    An important part of the wedding ceremony that will allow your guests to follow along with the proceedings.

    * Map or direction cards
    Save on confusion and frustration by providing location information to your our of town guests

    * Calligraphy
    The most popular decorative font style for wedding invitations, it is more an art form than righting.

    * Thank You Notes
    Don't forget to say Thank You, especially to those who helped make your special day possible, Guests, attendants and vendors alike.

    Other Invitations

    • Rehearsal Dinner / Party Invitations
    • Bridesmaids Luncheon Invitations
    • Bridesmaids Preparation with the bride
    • Bachelor Party Invitations

    These other invitations are optional, but should at least be given consideration. It is best for your planning purposes, to get confirmation of who will be attending these events.

    * Postage
    Your guests should not have to pay for postage, this should be provided for any correspondence you require a response from.

    TRANSPORTATION

    * Ride in Style
    Of all the aspects of your wedding, your transportation is the most public. Your decorations and attire will be seen by your friends and family, but your vehicle, whether it's a silver limousine, a crimson sports car or a horse drawn carriage, can announce your wedding to the entire world. So, pick something that fits your event's style, but remember, whatever you choose, you'll still want reliability and comfort.

    Traditionally, providing transportation is the bride's responsibility, but the logistics on the wedding day fall upon the best man. Not only is he charged with getting the groom to the church on time, but getting himself and guests to the reception, and driving the bride and groom from the reception.

    * Common Limo Services
    Limousines usually make at least two trips to the ceremony location. The first trip is to deliver the Groom and groomsmen. Then the limo is off to pick up the bride, bridesmaids and her family usually just mom & dad. After the service the limo is used for carrying the bride and groom to the photo shoot location and lastly to the reception.

    * Other Services
    Depending on your budget, you could also hire extra limousines or coaches to carry other guests, or arrange for friends and relatives to pitch in with their cars.

    See our list of local Limousine providers.

    * Antique Cars
    All limo services supply a driver but sometimes a friend or family member may have an antique car that may be used instead. Either the car owner or the best man can serve as the bride and groom's chauffeur but make sure they know when and where they are required to be.

    VIDEOGRAPHY

    Videography is one of the most lasting and memorable ways to preserve your wedding as the years roll forward. At the click of a button, you can see yourselves with family and friends in a way you could not appreciate on the actual day.

    * Better than ever
    Until recently, the wedding video typically tried to create an historical document that was, in a word, rather boring, especially after repetitive viewing. Recent developments in multimedia technology have altered this pattern of recording, making the wedding video or DVD more meaningful and movie-like, and highly stimulating to watch, as well as more, relevant, entertaining and moving.

    * DVD Features
    The advent of DVD technology has dramatically improved the life span potential of Videography, taking it from an average of 25 years on video to a form of preservation on DVD that has virtually no expiration date. This technology also allows viewers to surf the wedding by chapters. If you want to bypass the sermon and speeches, for example, you can now do it with a click of the button, rather than pressing fast-forward on a VCR. Those chapters also provide a place for bloopers if any, unedited footage and anything else you chose to include in your final video.

    * Talent
    What many couples don't realize is that the art of Videography is comprised of twenty percent equipment and 80 percent talent. For this reason, getting your uncle Sam to record the wedding on his video camera is no substitute for the services of a professional videographer. So if you're trying to cut costs and stretch your budget, be forewarned that Videography is not the place to do it.

    * Video Samples
    The good news is that that Annapolis valley is now home to some of the best videographers in Canada, artists who are stretching the limits of what's traditionally been accepted in a wedding video, and making it ever more creative and entertaining to watch. It is recommended to view samples of their previous work so you can see what you are paying for.

    * Costs
    The industry average for professional wedding Videography in the Halifax area starts at approximately $1,500. And though you might perceive that price tag as costly initially, remember that you're paying for invaluable memories, and a means of preserving them well into the future.

    * Presentations
    In addition to the wedding video, some couples request a multimedia presentation that can be shown to guests during the reception, and that tells the couple's story, of how they met, how they fell in love and what brought them to their wedding day.

    Making Memories, Touching lives!

    WEDDING PLANNERS

    Books are fine, web sites are great but there is nothing like someone in your corner taking care of all the details (some you many have overlooked) and ensuring that all goes like clockwork.

    * Fees
    Some consultants will charge a flat fee no matter how complicated the event, some who charge an hourly rate, while there are others who will not charge you directly, but receive a referral fee from the retailers booked.

    * Need Help?
    With the hectic pace our lives sometime take, more and more brides are turning to a wedding planner to help bring the day together. These Planners provide help and expert advice in ways no book can. They usually coordinate the entire wedding from selecting the florist to booking the honeymoon and then make sure everything arrives on time and is in it's proper place. With a large wedding the small details can easily be forgotten or left out altogether, planners make sure that every detail is just right.

    * Knowing what's available
    These professionals are familiar with the available retailers in each service category and can match your preferences with the retailer that will do the best job within your budget. It can save you a great deal of time and often money using a consultant who is an expert in his/her field and who deals with reliable services on an ongoing basis. Not all service providers in the Annapolis Valley Area are listed in the phone book thus are hard to find unless you know where to look.

    * Budget
    It is important to establish with your consultant the type of budget you are working with well in advance, this will set the ground rules as well as how formal the event will be. Planners know what corners can be cut to keep within budget constraints. Some may even know of ingenious ways to use homemade items that are hard to tell from expensive store bought items.
